>> protests at george washington university days after police cleared an encampment on that campus. hours ago, police started dismantling a protest. >> prime minister benjamin netanyahu addresses his growing biden in a new tensions with president biden in a new interview on his own. richard engel is in jerusalem this morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. president biden made it very clear to israel that the united states will not supply israel with offensive weapons if israel pushes ahead and launches a major ground offensive in the city of rafah. now prime minister netanyahu has responded saying israel is willing to go it alone. the un announced that, as of this morning, more than 100,000 palestinians have fled the city of rafah in southern gaza. many civilians had been ordered

to flee in order for their safety. now, they say, they have nowhere to go. we are tired, says this man. either they should kill us all at once and send us up to god or stop the war. but prime minister netanyahu is determined to press on with an offensive against rafah, saying israel is prepared to act alone and fight with only our fingernails if necessary, but adding, we have much more than >> we have a lot of igno our fingernails. netanyahu also spoke in a lengthy and non-confrontational interview with talk show host dr. phil. he took aim at protests on college campuses in the u.s., where demonstrators continued to clash with police overnight. >> you have a lot of ignorant people there whose sense of history at best goes back to

breakfast, not even that. >> reporter: he addressed president biden directly saying he hoped he and the president could overcome their differences but -- >> we will do what we have to do to protect our country. that means we will defeat hamas, including in rafah. >> reporter: israel says hamas has four remaining battalions of fighters in rafah and they must root them out. the white house already held up one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs, and president biden said some armed shipments would stop if israel attacks rafah's main population centers. but our crew in gaza is documenting how that is already. he keeps saying he wants to go home. this is his neighbor happening. these children were in their homes when they were hit by israeli shells. doctors tried to reassure a boy named mohammed, who keeps saying he wants to go home. this is his neighborhood in central rafah now, raising the question is israel already crossing president biden's red line?

the rafah operation has also derailed hostage negotiations and talks to achieve a cease-fire with one senior diplomat saying the talks have effectively collapsed. >> thank you, richard. week three of testimony of former president trump's criminal hush money trial wraps up today. new witnesses set to be called after jurors once again heard from the woman at the center of the case, adult film star stormy daniels. laura jarett joins us with the latest. >> it was always going to be a risky move for prosecutors to put stormy daniels on the witness stand. they said before, this is not a case about a salacious sex scandal. now, after 16 witnesses, as the state's case winds down, it is hard to know whether the jury understands the actual crime that's being alleged here. the third week of donald trump's criminal trial ending with a dramatic confrontation as his

defense team wrapped up testimony of stormy daniels after a decades-old story of an alleged sexual encounter. prosecutors accused the former president of buying her silence and doctors internal business records to cover it all up once in the white house. the defense attorney attempting to put daniels on trial, highlighting her accounts from that night in 2006 to in she's a liar. highlighting daniels' time in the porn industry saying it gave her a lot of experience in making up stories about sex appearing to be real. daniels defiant on the stand, responding, wow, that's not how i would put it. the sex in the films, it's very much real, just like what happened to me in that room. the questioning and testimony

this week only briefly delving into the actual $130,000 payment. mr. trump's former fixer, michael cohen made to daniels, the lynch pin of the state's case. instead, the defense trying to cast daniels as hungry for money and fame and determined to put mr. trump behind bars because it would help her bottom line, pointing to past tweets mocking his legal woes. and her current catalog of merch, including a saint candle. saying you are celebrating the indictment by selling things from your store. daniels shooting back, not unlike mr. trump. >> so what did you think of this testimony? >> i think it is really hard to know what the jury is getting out of this because she was so desperate to fight the defense attorney on every last little point and the defense attorney

was trying to show where she could trip her up. the jury might just say a pox on both of their houses in a case where her actual testimony is not the crux of the actual charges. you and i have discussed so many times, it is also falsification of business records and only at the very end of the cross did we come close to that. you sat in the courtroom. did you have the same impression? >> yeah. being there, i was struck by it. it was a tough cross examination, no question about it. they attacked stormy daniels credibility, scored some major points there. if this had been a case whether a sex assault took place, that cross-examination would make sense, but it's not. it is a case about business records, about which stormy daniels has essentially no damage. >> no knowledge at all. >> the final two questions from the defense attorney seemed the most relevant.

i wondered why the prosecutor put her on. why the defense made a meal about all the allegations and the going back and forth about all this alleged sex, when that's not what the case was about whatsoever. it was interesting to be there. i kept trying to think about what are the charges here in this case and how is this testimony relevant to making the decision for the jury? >> and whether they have done enough to prove-up their case because now as it's winding down, they know they have to hear from michael cohen. but they might not want to end with michael cohen if they're afraid of where he will go on the witness stand. we already heard from this former aid setting up this infamous meeting at the white house where the president, former president, talked to cohen about how they would arrange the payments. now we have to hear from cohen, and we have to see how he does at cross. >> it will be very interesting to see how both sides wrap up the case and the arguments they make on the case and the law as well. laura, thank you very much. in the meantime, we're picking up the pieces during a devastating week of severe weather. dozens of tornadoes, major flooding in some spots. that system is moving up the east coast. al will tell us what today and the weekend hold.

>> reporter: savannah, good morning. it was another night of severe weather for millions across the south, capping off a week of devastating storms with many waking up this morning hoping for some relief. the latest round of severe storms causing widespread damage, pummeling 1,000-mile stretch from kansas to north carolina. >> you just run. you just run for safety. and then it's over in just a matter of moments. >> reporter: for so many, memories buried and lives lost. the latest storms blamed for at least three deaths. in one community, prayers for a miracle. >> heal him. make him heal. >> reporter: 9-year-old asher sullivan fighting for his life. the boy in critical condition after getting caught in a storm drain outside nashville.

in texas, an ominous storm system quickly turning day into night. baseball-sized hail battering parts of the state. while in georgia, residents are still reeling from tornadoes touching down earlier in the week. >> all the lightning, the rain, the wind, it was just insane. couldn't even really hear my wife who was right next to me. >> reporter: terrifying twisters in alabama leveling homes there, too. >> i laid down on top of my babies and just started praying for god to save us. >> reporter: at one point nearly 200,000 homes were without power in the south. communities now hoping there is an end in sight. after so much heartache at the hands of mother nature. storms are continuing today with 7 million people at risk for severe weather, including more damaging winds. but a bit of good news. the tornado risk today is much lower. savannah. >> thank you.

risk may be lower, but let's bring in al now because there is tornado activity right now as we speak. >> yes. right now we are looking at tornado warnings in the panhandle of florida. thunderstorm watches, thunderstorm warnings. this is all moving into the southeast. we do have that risk. jacksonville, gainesville, savannah, georgia. 7 million people, wind gusts of 60 miles an hour, damaging hail. low tornado risk, but we can't rule it out. today that front brings that heavy shower activity, thunderstorms, showers in the northeast. tomorrow secondary cold front comes through. not a great mother's day. cooler conditions and more showers. and then where they have been looking at tons of rain from houston to new orleans, they are going to get drenched again. in fact, we have a flood risk sunday and monday from houston, baton rouge, new orleans, panama city because we are looking at 3 to 4 inches. some places could pick up to 5 inches of rain before this is

over. so flooding will be a big problem as well sunday into mother. monday night great from the gulf into the northeast. >> they have been really dealing with it. questions and outrage are mounting this morning over the shooting of a senior airman in florida. officers were responding to a disturbance call when the 23-year-old was shot and killed. his family claims police had the wrong man and the wrong apartment. now authorities releasing body cam footage of the incident. sam brock looking into it, speaking with family and the police. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. roger fortson was shot by police in the complex behind me. this morning we still don't know what the disturbance was they were responding to or who even called it in. new body camera footage does show a deputy identify himself opening up the door. the next few moments after that are under immense scrutiny.

when a deputy pulled into this florida apartment complex, it took about three minutes for him to enter an office. >> what's going on? >> i'm not sure. >> reporter: and connect with an unidentified woman about an alleged disturbance. >> are they fighting or something? >> reporter: she eventually took him to the unit 1401 where she believes the fighting originated. that's where this senior airman was alone, face-timing with his girlfriend. >> sheriff's office. open the door! >> reporter: after the deputy identifies himself twice, fortson opens up the door with a gun visible by his side but not raised. a split second later -- >> step out. >> reporter: 6 shots are fired, and the 23-year-old's life is over. not owned at any point did the sheriffs department say, we went to the wrong department. >> the okaloosa sheriffs department has not owned up to the fact that they went to the wrong apartment, as if he did

something wrong, as if he was committing some crime. he did nothing. >> reporter: we spoke to his mother and her lawyer, benjamin crump, shortly before the video was released. >> there is a lot of doubt on my mind because roger was the only person in his apartment. was he fighting himself? >> reporter: the family's attorney says his gun was a legally registered firearm. and the sheriffs department this morning doubling down they were in the right place. >> i told his family this afternoon that they have my word if this shooting is found to be unjustified their son's name will be fully vindicated and justice will be served. >> reporter: as the investigation into the senior airman's death deepened, the brother of five who was particularly close to his 10-year-old sister, set the standard for how to achieve his dreams. >> he was a role model. >> reporter: and after that video was released, guys, the family's attorney wanted to know

it started a little after midnight on millmont drive. no one was injured, but for a time, the response closed. nearby streets. firefighters say the building is a storage facility for food preparation, but it's not clear who uses it. i'm kris sanchez in san francisco, where the president and first lady are waking up this morning for a day of fundraising. president biden landed at moffett field in mountain view yesterday afternoon. protesters planned to line alpine road as he makes his way to a fundraiser in palo alto after a fundraiser in portola valley. he will also head to seattle next. and the first lady will head down to southern california. thanks a lot, chris. let's get a look at your morning commute with mike, the macarthur bart station, ginger over here and it is the beginning or the end of the line, depending on how you're looking at it. let's look at the map. macarthur station over here in oakland. this section, the red and orange lines, is completely blocked. in fact, there's no red line service right now because of an equipment problem. alongside the

track. orange line is also impeded anywhere north of macarthur. it only operates between macarthur and berryessa. that's to the south. if you're getting over to sfo, you'll get over to millbrae using the yellow line, and then you can take the shuttle over to sfo. but the note is, again, that section of the orange and the red lines between macarthur heading north up to richmond, is currently out of service because of an equipment problem. there's something alongside the tracks that is causing a complication through that stretch. we'll continue to track it back to you. thank you. we'll catch up with you in a bit. we'll have another local news update for you in half an hour. until then, have a nice morning.

craig has a "today" exclusive. eric smith nearly lost his life. it didn't happen on a battlefield, but just a block from his home when his heart suddenly stopped. >> he's only alive today because a good samaritan stepped in and refused to give up on him. craig, you were there when they reunited. >> yeah, it was special. in fact, u.s. marines, they're trained to face life-and-death situations. but when the general suddenly collapsed when running, things looked grim. that's when a perfect stranger with the right training came to the rescue. the morning that general eric smith technically died started out well enough. he cheered on runners at the start of the marine corps

marathon in washington, d.c. those runners included his wife, trish, who was doing the ultra marathon. >> went to the finish line, greeted trish when she finished her 50k. i handed out medals to finishers, high-fiving people, taking photos and then we came home in the late afternoon, and i went for my standard three-mile run around the capitol. >> but general smith never made it home. he had been to war and back, survived being wounded in combat. but on this day, he collapsed a block from his home. what he didn't know is for all of his 58 years, he had a ticking time bomb in his chest. he was born with a faulty heart valve. what's the last thing you remember? >> going for the run. >> that's it? >> yeah. that's it.

i don't remember going down. >> at that very moment, tim was down the block. he was in town from seattle to run the marine corps marathon with his sister. they just finished a post race lunch when they found general smith unconscious. >> my sister started calling 911. my dad joined us. then we started assessing the person to see what was wrong. and could tell that they weren't breathing. they weren't responsive. so we started cpr. >> tim, who had already run an ultra marathon himself that morning, was now in a different kind of race, to save a stranger's life. but they brought a very specific skill set to the task, tim is a cpr instructor and he immediately started doing chest compressions and kept doing them for nearly ten minutes until an ambulance arrived. >> the general's wife trish saw the commotion a block from their home. >> i just remember thinking to myself, oh, they're transporting somebody. little did i know that that was him. >> hours later, she and the general's staff found him at a washington hospital. >> i was kind of in shock, but i

just know that he's a strong person and he was going to make it. >> before she arrived, the nation's top marine had been treated as a john doe patient because none of the medical staff knew his identity. >> all this happened to a john doe. it wasn't as many general smith got special treatment because he's the commandant of the marine corps. tim didn't know who he was. the people in the ems didn't know who he was. no one in the hospital knew who he was until he had gone through all of this and his life was saved. >> a life-saving chain of events started by a stranger from seattle. >> you saved the general's life. >> i think there is a lot of people that helped contribute. i'm very proud of my family, how we responded.

them in ice water. and then heat them really quickly. >> i didn't know you could save them. >> do you guys know how to poach an egg? >> we'll teach it and do it again. >> delicious. i mean, crazy. crazy flavor. >> this is the favorite part, right? you can make this your own and do anything you want. we will start with olive oil. we have some chilies, green onions, green garlic is delicious in here. these are asparagus we blanched. we want them to be crunchy, so we will not overcook them. saute them for two or three minutes. >> got it. >> and then we will add some spinach. >> lovely. >> so not conventional, obviously, like a structure where we are simmering the eggs in tomato sauce. this is a sauteed preparation that will come together quickly. >> you just saute it until it cooks down. >> until it cooks down. seasoned it with salt. cook the spinach until it barely wilts.
